Four Sigmatic. We’ve all heard of them and their mushroom drinks at this point, right? My favorite podcast of all time, The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, has talked about Four Sigmatic for what seems like years. Host Lauryn Bosstick can literally get me to try anything — so naturally, I got me some goodies.
Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries. Mushrooms have several benefits — ranging from things such as combatting stress to various sicknesses / boosting our immunity — and the modern world is finally getting on board. Upon doing some research on the topic, Erica Steele N.D. mentions that most mushrooms have “potent antiviral and antitumor properties, while others support metabolic and inflammatory conditions such as hypertension and cholesterol” (Steele). So.. basically, I said… “Sign me up.”
On a Monday morning, after getting my Four Sigmatic goodies in the mail, I boiled up a kettle of water and pulled out my French press. I had their Ground Mushroom Coffee With Lion’s Mane sitting on my kitchen countertops, ready for me to indulge in. I did my whole routine — putting just enough of the coffee in the bottom, pouring hot water on top, and letting it steep for 5-6 minutes — and soon, it was time to try it out.
It’s this beautiful dark roast that is perfect to blend with any creamer or syrups of your choice (I prefer frothed almond milk and Torani Sugar-Free Syrups). I even add my Inulin and Collagen powders to the coffee (can you tell I listen to The Skinny Confidential, yet?). I’ve definitely talked about collagen on my blog before, but inulin is a great source of fiber and it helps control bloat and cravings. I’ve recently started adding it to my coffee after being influenced by Lauryn Bosstick, and I really find that it makes a difference.
Anyway, back to the coffee (sorry, had to get off track because I love sharing specifics!!)…
So, the thing that I noticed about this coffee blend is that…
1. It tastes good. It’s a very smooth taste. I could drink it black if I really wanted to and I wouldn’t complain. They say that this coffee has a nutty flavor, and I can attest to that.
2. I don’t crash from it. It’s a nice source of steady, stable energy.
The reason for this is because of the Lion’s Mane and Chaga in the coffee. There’s 250 mg of each in each serving.
Lion’s Mane: A GREAT mushroom for productivity and creativity. It can help you think more clearly! It can even help fight against dementia and relieve symptoms of depression + anxiety (Heathline).
Chaga: This mushroom has been used for immune system benefits for centuries (Four Sigmatic). Studies show that Chaga can reduce long-term inflammation and can help fight bacteria and viruses, thus boosting our immune system (Heathline). It can even help lower blood sugar and cholesterol, and combat aging while also reducing fatigue and even killing cancer cells (Fraser).
I’ve also found that this coffee doesn’t upset my stomach as much, either. I definitely recommend trying it out. Incorporating these mushrooms into something we all drink every day (COFFEE!) is an extremely easy way to do something good for your body by feeding it things to boost our immunity and brain function.
Next, I tried out their Defend line. They have so many different products in each line — you just have to check them out for yourself and see what kind of products fit your needs, whether it be coffee, protein, etc. — but I chose the Sweet Vanilla Protein to try in the Defend series.
I love me a good protein shake, but the shake has to mix well and be balanced enough in flavor. I can’t do anything super sweet or super bland. And, I always mix with almond milk. No water for me. I’m not there yet. Therefore, it’s critical that my protein shakes must taste abso-freakin-delicious or else I’m not drinking it. Nada.
This one is pretty freakin’ bomb. Of course, it’s vanilla — a crowd-pleasing favorite but nothing too exciting (I switch it up between this one and my Unico Nutrition Apollo Cookie Dough protein). But this.. This is a good vanilla. I like the taste and it mixes very well with my almond milk.
One thing that I was shocked to find out is that Four Sigmatic uses REAL vanilla and ZERO fillers, gums, grains, or Stevia for their proteins. And it’s all organic and tastes good. A win. It’s also vegan, so anyone can enjoy it.
Okay, so let me tell you a bit about the benefits of this protein.
This protein has 7 adaptogenic mushrooms. That’s right, you read that correctly. SEVEN ADAPTOGENIC MUSHROOMS. And they even use my FAVORITE supplement ever — ASHWAGANDHA. Y’all, I’m annoying about my ashwaghanda. I love it so much. It works wonders for me. So the fact that I can have my ashwaghanda first thing in the morning to make me feel all zen and vibey during the day… Oh my goodness gracious. I almost fell out of my dang seat.
These are the mushrooms and adaptogenic herbs that they incorporate:
Chaga (benefits stated above)
Reishi: The queen of mushrooms. Fights against occasional stress.
Cordyceps: Supports energy and endurance.
Lion’s Mane (benefits stated above).
Turkey Tail: It’s a kind of mushroom, don’t worry. 😛 It is known for its antioxidant properties and can help support your immune system.
Ashwagandha: Can we just clap for this one? It’s an Ayurvedic herb (MY FAVORITE) that supports NUMEROUS conditions, but I love it for mood stabilization and to invoke a sense of calmness.
Eleuthero: An adaptogenic root that has been used in Russia and Asia for over a hundred years — aka “Siberian ginseng.” It supports overall wellbeing, stamina, and endurance.
So not only does it taste good, but I also am obsessed with all of the wonderful ingredients that they use in this protein. I haven’t used it enough to notice a huge difference just yet, but I will keep you updated! Make sure to follow me on Instagram @delanawilkinson.
Lastly, I tried a product from their Chill line, which is perfect for nighttime. The drink mix that I chose was their uber-famous Mushroom Cacao with Reishi drink mix. You can drink it hot or cold, but I prefer it hot because it kind of reminds me of hot chocolate. I haven’t mastered preparing it cold yet (it keeps getting clumpy on me), but it mixes very well with hot water or milk.
Reishi mushroom: A great mushroom to help combat occasional stress and wind down at the end of the day.
2g of Organic Coconut Palm Sugar
I like to drink this in the evenings as I read a book. I like to add some almond milk and sugar-free vanilla syrup or vanilla honey to add an extra kick of flavor and make it creamier.
Honestly, that’s one of my gripes with this product — I wish it was creamier. It’s advertised as almost a “hot cocoa with benefits” and it just isn’t creamy enough for me — hence why I like to amp it up a bit. But if you’re into something lighter, go for it without the milk.
It doesn’t zen me out as much as melatonin and ashwagandha do, but having a nice warm, chocolate-y drink at the end of a long day does feel like a relaxing treat at the end of the day. Maybe it’ll knock you out more for sleep-purposes, but I personally need something a bit stronger. If you’re trying to watch sugar and desserts, however, this is a nice option that tastes like a sweet treat as you curl up on the couch watching Netflix and start preparing for bed.
I aim to continue trying more of their products in the future because as you can see, mushrooms have a ton of health benefits that I absolutely do not want to miss out on. I’ll keep you all posted on which ones that I try next, and I encourage you to try some of Four Sigmatic’s products out for yourself and see if you feel any difference! The Think coffee is by far my favorite product, but maybe something else will be a holy-grail product for you. Please let me know what you end up loving!
